The project studies traditional bronze coloring techniques and then pursues innovation in materials and makes those techniques relevant for application nowadays, establishing a connection between tradition and contemporary application. The project explores “material innovation and design”, a missing link that is needed for the contemporary commercial application of traditional craftsmanship.
Currently the project has finished compiling Classical Colors of Bronze: Copper Colors and selected 72 representative classical colors; it conducted field trips to and collected information on important ancient Shu civilizations in the history of Bronze Age culture (the Jinsha Site in Chengdu and the Sanxingdui Site in Guanghan, Sichuan province) as well as three local workshops. In the color innovation stage, the project produced altogether 50 kinds of real classical color samples and selected around 70 innovative colors after nearly 400 experiments.
System design of Copper Colors is being carried out on an ongoing basis.
